happy happiness happens day!

Say it three times fast, I dare you!

I've once again been inspired by Gretchen Rubin and her Happiness Project . . .  Her site features her 12 Happiness Commandments down the left side - a concept I've always considered cool. Then, a few weeks ago, she put up a post titled "Six tips for designing your happiness commandments" . . . well, I just had to try my hand/heart/mind at that (creating one's own commandments really puts one in touch with the goddess in one!).

So, in celebration of Happiness Happens Day tomorrow (8.8.08), here are
Kristen's Baker's Dozen Happiness Commandments
:

1. Be you.

2. Breathe - in *and* out.

3. Connect.

4. Be gentle with yourself.

5. Go for the flow.

6. See the miracles.

7. Be grateful.

8. Keep on giving.

9. Ask for what you want.

10. Have some faith.

11. Just do it.

12. Go natural.

13. There's no way to be perfect, and infinite ways to be good.

Let me know should you like elucidation for any/all of my commandments . . . and feel free to share your own rules to be happy by!

five positive changes.

Here's the crown jewel of Cheryl Richardson's "Week 26 Life Review"five positive changes I've made to date in 2008:

1) I've lost about 40 lbs. since last autumn.

2) I tried a part-time office job and quit it to return to full-time freelancing.

3) Little by little, I'm overcoming my natural inclinations toward procrastination and sedentariness (see St. Expiditus, above, the Patron Saint to invoke against procrastination; his cross reads "hodie," which means "today").

4) Little by little, I'm slowing down to a more measured pace - life is still way busy, but not as overwhelmingly crazybusy as often as it used to be.

5) I'm purposefully creating opportunities to connect with nature.

So, what five positive changes have you made to date in '08? Share, please!

halfway review - part 2.

Christie Brinkley is amazing . . . what she looks like is how I want to feel at 54. Wow.

Anyway, here are my answers to the final five questions from Cheryl Richardson's "Week 26 Life Review" . . .

6. Have you forgiven yourself for something you did that's been bothering you?
The only answer I can come up with to this question has to do with continually forgiving myself for going "off-program" . . . I've been following Weight Watchers' "flex" plan since last autumn, and I've lost about 40 lbs. Still, I've got almost ten pounds to go to my goal weight, and I've been seriously struggling to reach it - losing a little, gaining a little, a real two-steps-forward-one-step-back sort of deal. So yes, I find myself caught up in a perpetual cycle of guilt and forgiveness nowadays, in addition to a bounty of self-reminders that, like life itself, my "comfortable weight" is a journey (though it looks suspiciously like a destination whenever I'm glaring down at the dang scale . . . ).

7. How have you taken better care of your body, your mind, your heart or your spirit?
OK, well, the obvious answer is, first and foremost, I've lost about 40 lbs. (and counting, damnit!). And even though I've been exercising regularly for the past three years, I've bumped up my exercise quotient, too, which just feels good. For my mind, I try to turn off the tv rather than randomly channel surf when I'm not watching a particular program, and try to complete a crossword puzzle every day. For my heart and spirit, I quit my part-time job to return to full-time freelancing, and I'm working daily to tune into my needs/wants, my kids and where they're coming from, and what the universe may be presenting to me.

8. How have you been a better partner, spouse, parent, friend or co-worker?
Well, there's the sex thing, which I feel fairly sure ranks me a little higher up on the Good Wife-o-meter. And more generally, I've been focusing in on giving more, especially if I'm feeling like I'm not receiving enough. For example, if I feel like my family isn't showing me enough appreciation, rather than becoming petulant, I do something to show them how much I appreciate them . . . and magically, I feel better. And I'm a better mom and wife for it, too.

9. What have you done to help others improve the quality of their lives?
Ditto the giving concentration . . . I can't help but think giving to others - whether it's my family or some guy trying to merge into traffic - somehow improves the quality of their lives, albeit sometimes only momentarily. And I've also been following a contribution calendar I created at the beginning of the year: $50/month to one of a dozen select nonprofits (August's donation is going to fight prostate cancer).

10. Are you letting things be easy?
I'm trying, and I believe I'm improving, though it's quite counter to my control-freak nature. :]

halfway review - part 1.

A couple of weeks ago, I promised to post my answers to the questions in Cheryl Richardson's "Week 26 Life Review," a journaling exercise intended to help you pause at the halfway mark of the year and reflect upon the positive changes you've made in your life. OK, so here goes the first five . . .

1. What hidden part of you have you awakened this year?
OK, it may be TMI time, but candidly, I've not quite awakened yet but am working to reawaken my sexuality. My husband and I have been caught up in what I call "the household years," with three jobs, two little kids, a dog with irritable bowel syndrome, a mortgage, two car payments, etc., etc., etc., essentially since we began our family almost ten years ago. And while I'm not saying we're never intimate (we did manage to have a second child and all), I'd be embarrassed to admit exactly how infrequently we're physically close. So over the past few months, I've begun doing what all the experts suggest, but what none of us think is really necessary: I've begun scheduling "playdates" with my man. And it's working - no details, but I do feel like a little faded piece of me is reappearing; I feel more vibrant, more engaged, more connected with my guy . . . and frankly, I think it's helped me be easier and sweeter toward him beyond the bedroom (it's harder to be mean to the man who's doing it for you!). OK, nuff said.

2. What positive changes have you made to your home or office?
We moved into our current home almost four years ago, and to date, the only room never fully organized - OK, not even partially organized - is my home office (and yes, I understand how this is a manifestation of me putting myself behind the rest of my family). This summer, I've finally gotten serious about changing my home office from somewhere full of piles of clutter and dread to someplace I find comfortable and inspiring. And the transformation is almost complete - I intend to finish it up by Labor Day.

3. Are you getting your creative needs met? How?
Yes, I feel I'm meeting my creative needs fairly consistently - mostly through scrapbooking, itunes (creating playlists is my passion!), my blog (ta da!) and putting my office together. I'm loving it all.

4. What changes have you made to better honor your integrity?
The key move I've made this year to be true to myself and my priorities was quitting the part-time office job I'd been at since last November. I thought it would be the best of both working worlds - the freedom of freelancing combined with a consistent paycheck. But for me, it turned into a poor choice for both my professional and personal lives - too much to do for both, not enough time for either, and not close to enough money to make up for the all-around struggle and stress. Suffice to say, I'm a much happier, easier person as a full-time mompreneur.

5. Have you added any small pleasures to your life? If so, then what are they?
Just this summer, I've begun trying to schedule time for two small pleasures I tend to put off until there's no time left for them - reading for pleasure and connecting with nature.

Tomorrow, I'll post my answers to the final five questions . . . stay tuned!!

one minute to presence.

Here's a lovely little reminder from The Happiness Project's creator, Gretchen Rubin, to be present for your life (and, if you're a mom, then for your children's lives) . . . especially relevant for me today as I'm hit with the realization that we're coming down the backside of summer and my youngest will be a kindergartner before this month is through . . . *sigh.*

It's just a minute long - enjoy: The Years Are Short.

gratitude list.

I haven't done this for a while, and I'm thinking it's about time. Here are my top ten things to be thankful for:

1. frozen grapes, which I'm noshing on as I type.
2. "tent nights," when our kids sleep up in the playroom under two card tables covered by blankets.
3. having a good friend who happens to be a psychic medium (how cool is that?!?).
4. sharing supper with three beautiful, brilliant, way creative girlfriends.
5. my daughter completing her last swimming lesson ever, and with flying (lapping?) colors.
6. weekends with no scheduled activities (almost never happens).
7. Fredericksburg (love this little hill country town!).
8. bath junkie (just discovered this terrific treasure trove of yummy body products).
9. our upcoming trip to the beach.
10. my "tribe" (my birth-aunt & her family).

Oh - and one to grow on:

11. my blog readers, like you! Seriously, thank you for being here! :)
